Statement

I create bodies of work that are bright and innovative that usually reflect interpersonal relationships and connections that often highlight Afrofuturism and its political commentary with a warm and familiar tone. This creates opportunity for thought-provoking experimental life changing conversations that could promote change within self and our personal worlds, further improving the world at large. Stories from voices that do not always get the room or space to speak, stories from voices that have been silenced for generations, stories from voices that have not yet discovered the essence of their voice are all inspirations for my work. Twelve days before my sixteenth birthday, I lost my mother to Lupus and for years it felt like my voice didn’t matter, I couldn't find the point or purpose in a lot of things. My voice started to fade away, until years later, continuous healing, and finding my way, I’ve regained the power of my voice. In my voice. I want to help others do the same. My work opens up opportunities for those who look within and truly define who they are for themselves while they journey back to their power, their voice. Download my resume

Biography

Cherise Kimoy is a dedicated, risk-taking artist originally from Miami, FL. She received a BFA in Acting from the UCF then professionally performed regionally; featured in musicals, plays, original works, readings, TV and film opportunities. After being in rooms with such creative minds, that love for playwriting became a seed that was planted in her. During the Pandemic she started to fully water that seed and birth stories of her own. She is currently a NYU Tisch Dramatic Writing Graduate candidate, where she is able to master her craft of playwriting and TV writing as she expects to graduate this may! She has been honored as a featured playwright with theatres like Maker’s Ensemble, CryHavoc NYC, New York Theatre Festival and Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe in Florida! Kimoy also teaches playwriting and musical theatre to elementary and middle school students, focusing on the fundamentals of using their authentic voice to relay a message, encouraging her students to create the world they want to see just as she aspires to do the same with her work.
